200 Years of Serbs in America

Join us in Celebrating 200 Years of Serbs in America

The celebration of 200 years of Serbs in America will be held on Vidovdan, June 28, 2014 in the city of Philadelphia, in front of the Independence Hall where both the declaration of American independence and the founding of the Constitution took place.

It has been two centuries since the first Serb, Djordje Sagic, also known as Judge George Fisher, arrived to America through the Port of Philadelphia. The first period of immigration dated from 1820 to 1880. The early immigrants who came in larger numbers to America, came mostly from the coast of Montenegro (The Bay of Kotor) and Dalmatia known for their long-time seafaring tradition. The second period of immigration dated from the 1880s to the second decade of the twentieth century.

.

Many immigrants were without any specific qualifications (many of them were illiterate, without knowledge of English), and they found jobs in mines and the steel industry. There were no labor organizations at that time, no health insurance, and no social security. They needed some kind of insurance to protect themselves and their families. The first Serbian benevolent society in Pennsylvania was established in McKeesport: The Serbian Orthodox Fraternal Society No. 1, and it joined already existing the Russian Orthodox Fraternal Society. In 1901, Sava Hajdin explored an idea of setting up an independent federation of Serbian fraternal societies. Sava Hajdin founded the Serbian Orthodox Federation Srbobran on June 2, 1901. On the convention in 1929 it was named by the Serb National Federation (united Srbobran, Sloboda, Sloga, and Svesna Srbadija). One of the most important contributions of the Serb National Federation to the promotion of Serbian interests in the North America is its official organ the American Srbobran, the oldest continuously published Serbian newspaper in the North American continent.

There are three most important elements of a foundation of the Serbian identity in the U.S.: the Orthodox Christian Faith, the Serbian heritage, and the American democratic tradition.

The Tesla Science foundation from Philadelphia invites all Serbian organizations, institutions, churches, and individuals to participate in the historical celebration of 200 years when the first Serb arrived to America. The primary goal of this greatest Serbian event in the U.S. is to celebrate the Serbian culture, arts, sciences, sports and business as well as contributions of all known and unknown men and women of Serbian heritage, organizations, institutions, and the Serbian Orthodox Churches. We will welcome all organizations, institutions, churches, media and individuals to submit their proposals, programs or projects at This email address is being protected from spambots. Mission Statement

The anniversary celebration of “200 Years of Serbs in America” will bring together Serbian-Americans and friends of Serbs throughout the North American continent. The anniversary celebration will be held June 27 – 29, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA at Independence National Historical Park, where both the Declaration of Independence was signed and the founding of the Constitution took place. Philadelphia was chosen as the site for the celebration because the first Serb, Djordje Sagic, later known as George Fisher, arrived on the American Continent through the port of Philadelphia.

The primary goal of this great historical event in the United States is not only to celebrate the arrival of the first Serb in America, but also to celebrate Serbian culture, arts, sciences, sports, business, and military. The contributions of all distinguished individuals of Serbian heritage, organizations, and Serbian Orthodox Churches in America will also be recognized. This celebration will enhance appreciation and knowledge of Serbian culture and traditions and strengthen the bonds between Serbian and American people. Those attending our celebration in Philadelphia will relive the Serbian-American experience culturally, spiritually, and socially in many interesting venues, such as “Tesla’s Nation” exhibition, lectures, theatre performances and concerts. A likeness of Tesla will be unveiled at the Franklin Science Museum. Natalija Nogulich, actor, will be the Master of Ceremonies for all programs. The entire event will be filmed and showcased in a book called “Tesla’s Nation – Serbs in America.”

There are three important elements of the foundation of Serbian-American identity in the United States: Serbian Orthodox Church in America, Serbian heritage, and American democratic values. This celebration is not only about remembering the past, but it will also allow us to look toward the future.

It is time to promote the best side of the Serbian-Americans to the world, so that we can show future generations Serbian-American achievements in helping to build America and the world. We welcome everyone who is interested in preserving and perpetuating Serbian culture and traditions.

The Tesla Science Foundation (TSF) in Philadelphia invites all Serbian organizations, churches, and individuals to consider attendance, sponsorship or exhibition in the historical celebration of the anniversary of the first Serb arriving in America 200 years ago.

It is a moment in time all Serbian-Americans should cherish. Do not miss this opportunity to be a part of history!

The Tesla Science Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, will host the celebration. It is dedicated to promoting the life, legacy and scientific innovations of Nikola Tesla by raising awareness of his contributions to the 21st Century, including his many patents and inventions. Nikola Tesla, visionary and scientist, is included in the UNESCO Memory of the World register.

On The Holy Liturgy

by Bishop Athanasius Yevtich

The Divine Liturgy is at the center of Orthodox Christian life. It is through the Eucharist that the faithful are united with Christ and therefore with one another. Every Eucharistic gathering is an image and a reality of the Heavenly Liturgy, i.e. unceasing Synaxis of angels and saints around God’s throne. Thus the Liturgy is the proclamation of and a real image of God’s Kingdom in this world.

In this television interview conducted by the Logos, a renowned Orthodox theologian and retired Bishop of Zahumlje and Hercegovina, his Grace Atanasije, brings forth these essential points citing historical development of the Liturgies bringing to light the present misunderstanding of certain Liturgical actions and movements.

Bishop Atanasije aptly points out the necessity for Liturgical renewal, i.e. moving away from passive liturgical attendance to active participation and immersion of the soul and body into a full communion with Christ.
