Divine Liturgy at the Heart of Serbian Life

The oldest and the newest Serbian book in North America is the Služebnik (Liturgy book) used lovingly by clergy for the Divine Services. One was published in 1519 in Venice and the other in 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

Тhe Služebnik was printed in Venice in 1519 by Božidar Vuković, a Serb from Montenegro became a renowned printer in Venice. This printed version of the Divine Liturgy was the first printed book in Cyrillic in history. It is of priceless value to Serbian and Slavic heritage and literature. This rare book belonged to the Very Reverend Milutin Tesla (1819–1879) who was the father of Nikola Tesla (1856–1943). When Milutin died his widow, Djuka (nee Mandić) kept the book. After her death, Nikola Tesla took the rare copy to New York with him and had it restored. This rare Book of the Serbian Liturgy is in the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, in the heartland and physical center of the United States. It was restored by the Truman library in 1977.

“The Sacred and Divine Liturgy оf our Father among the Saints John Chrysostom” was published in 2018 by St. Sebastian Press of the Western American Diocese in English and Serbian, and edited by Bishop Maxim Vasiljević of Western American Diocese.

Although 500 years separate these two publications, their existence witnesses to the fact that the Divine Liturgy continues to be at the heart of Serbian life and culture.

Bishop Sava (Vuković)

(1967–1977)

Bishop Sava was born on April 13, 1930 in Senta. After graduating from secondary school he completed the St. Sava Seminary in Belgrade in 1950 and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade in 1954. He did his postgraduate studies at the Old Catholic University in Bern, Switzerland. He obtained a Doctor of Divinity degree at the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade. His dissertation topic was “Typicon of the Archbishop Nikodim.”

He was professor at St. Sava Seminary in Belgrade prior to his election as a bishop. He received monastic vows at the Monastery “Vavedenje” (Entry of the Theotokos) in Belgrade on December 3, 1959. The monastic name he received was Sava. He was ordained hierodeacon on December 4, 1959. On June 3, 1961 he was ordained hieromonk. The Holy Bishops’ Assembly of the Serbian Orthodox Church elected him bishop on May 20, 1961 with title “vicar bishop of Moravica.” He was consecrated bishop on July 23, 1961 in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Belgrade by Patriarch German. Bishop Sava held the following positions: Professor of liturgies at the Theological College, member of the Orthodox Commission for Pan Orthodox Council, and representative of the Serbian Church for inter-confessional dialogues. The Bishops’ Assembly elected Bishop Dr. Sava on June 1, 1967 for a Bishop of the Eastern American and Canadian Diocese. He occupied this position until May 1977 when he was elected as Bishop of the diocese of Šumadija.

On The Holy Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy is at the center of Orthodox Christian life. It is through the Eucharist that the faithful are united with Christ and therefore with one another. Every Eucharistic gathering is an image and a reality of the Heavenly Liturgy, i.e. unceasing Synaxis of angels and saints around God’s throne. Thus the Liturgy is the proclamation of and a real image of God’s Kingdom in this world.

In this television interview conducted by the Logos, a renowned Orthodox theologian and retired Bishop of Zahumlje and Hercegovina, his Grace Atanasije, brings forth these essential points citing historical development of the Liturgies bringing to light the present misunderstanding of certain Liturgical actions and movements.

Bishop Atanasije aptly points out the necessity for Liturgical renewal, i.e. moving away from passive liturgical attendance to active participation and immersion of the soul and body into a full communion with Christ.
