Александар Живадиновић, водећи српски иконописац из Београда, осликава олтарску апсиду најстарије православне цркве у јужној Калифорнији.

У овим данима, када у црквеном богослужбеном циклусу започиње период припреме за Велики и Часни Пост, који нас припрема за прослављање Празника Христовог Васкрсења, и када нас Црква нарочито позива на учествовање у есхатолошкој реалности и пресаздању и обнављању пале природе човекове, са радошћу сведочимо још једно својеврсно обнављање и облачење у ново рухо.

Наиме, наш најстарији и први храм лосанђелески, који је изродио две монументалне цркве и парохије, ових дана пролази кроз другу фазу живописања. Овај подухват нема за сврху само да улепша богослужбени простор, него и да сведочи “нову реалност“  коју нам доноси Христово Васкрсење са поруком да “Христос Васкрсе, земљу потресе, тугу однесе, радост донесе” (Св. Владика Николај).

BEGINNINGS

Serbs belong to the grand family of Slav nations. As early as 5th and 6th centuries AD they migrated from their ancient lands in Northern Europe to the Balkan Peninsular which, at the time, constituted northern regions of the Byzantine Empire. There they found a mostly deserted, devastated and pillaged territory since, prior to their arrival, it had been affected by the Grand Migration of the Euro-Asian peoples in 4th and 5th centuries AD.

Being pagan, the South Slav nations considerably contributed towards the destruction of the Christian Church organization which, in its turn, had functioned well on the Balkan Peninsular several centuries before their arrival.

It is without doubt that first Christian influences on the Serbs occurred after their arrival to the Balkans. Of course, Serbs were not the first pagan nation in this region to have come into contact with Christianity; one should also mention the Goths, Huns, Langobards, Avars, Gepids, Herulians…

Very early upon their arrival Slavs, i.e. Serbs inhabiting northern regions of Byzantium, had shown willingness to stay in the area indefinitely. This decision to stay might have been taken during the rule of Emperor Justinian (527-565) if not even earlier.

Adoption of Christianity in the already mostly Christianised Europe was, as far as the Slav tribes were concerned, a long and a complex process, but, at the same time, an unavoidable one. The neighbouring environment of Serbs, Bulgars, Croats and others had become Christian centuries before. Being pagan, these Slav nations sharply stood out against this christianized milieu and it was only a matter of time and circumstances before they also would become Christian.

За вре­ме анек­си­је Бо­сне, свра­тио сам јед­но ве­че код по­кој­ног Че­де Ми­ја­то­ви­ћа у Лон­до­ну, ко­ји је та­да ста­но­вао у Red­klif Gar­dens. Ту ми бе­ше пред­ста­вљен овај наш ве­ли­ки ми­си­о­нар и ду­хов­ник, ко­га сам пре то­га по­зна­вао са­мо пре­ко ње­го­вих пи­са­них књи­га и бе­се­да.

Ве­ли­ки хри­шћан­ски ми­си­о­нар!

Те ре­чи би­ле су ча­роб­не за ме­не. Ја сам се свом ду­шом за­ра­до­вао, по­што сам имао при­ли­ке да се са њи­ме лич­но та­да упо­знам. Да упо­знам тог ве­ли­ког Ср­би­на, и пра­ву и ис­кре­ну ду­шу.

Го­ди­не 1915. до­ве­зао сам се же­ле­зни­цом Сан­та Фе у Сан Фран­ци­ско. На ста­ни­ци при­сту­пио ми је је­дан сред­њо­ве­чан све­ште­ник и пред­ста­вио ми се: -Ја сам ар­хи­ман­дрит Се­ва­сти­јан Да­бо­вић. –А, ви сте тај ве­ли­ки хри­шћан­ски ми­си­о­нар о ко­ме ми је го­спо­дин Че­да Ми­ја­то­вић го­во­рио. Он се до­бро­ћуд­но осмех­нуо.

Та­кав је увек био: са­ма до­бро­ћуд­ност, кро­тост, ти­хост и тр­пе­љи­вост. Та­ко је остао до смр­ти.

Док смо се во­зи­ли у трам­ва­ју, он је у го­во­ру пре­ла­зио са кон­ти­нен­та на кон­ти­нент, са оке­а­на на оке­ан, као из со­бе у со­бу. Ње­му је све то би­ло бли­ско и обич­но, као за ме­не да­ле­ко и нео­бич­но. То је би­ло пре два­де­сет пет го­ди­на. Ко би та­да мо­гао слу­ти­ти да ћу ја, као епи­скоп Жич­ки, опо­ја­ти и са­хра­ни­ти то­га срп­ског ми­си­о­на­ра у ма­на­сти­ру Жи­чи 1940. го­ди­не! Но, ствар­ност пре­ва­зи­ла­зи све људ­ске слут­ње и сно­ве. А ствар­но­шћу упра­вља про­ми­сао Бо­жи­ји. За­и­ста, про­ми­сао Бо­жи­ји у жи­во­ту по­кој­ног оца Се­ва­сти­ја­на са­свим је ја­сан и ди­ван. Про­сто, као план јед­но­га до­ма­ћи­на у по­гле­ду њи­ве и рад­ни­ка на њи­ви, та­ко је план Бо­жи­ји у по­гле­ду овог на­шег ми­си­о­на­ра у Но­вом Све­ту очи­гле­дан, сми­шљен и це­лис­хо­дан. Ми ће­мо из­не­ти тај план, па не­ка чи­та­о­ци са­ми су­де.

A paper read at the meeting of the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Alumni Association, Brookline, Massachusetts

The spirit of any particular national church is manifested above all in its saints, as well as in the work and writings of its most outstanding leaders. Therefore we shall devote this paper to those shepherds of the Serbian Orthodox Church who in their lifetimes were immersed in the spirit of universal Christianity and at the same time served in their local churches as witnesses and martyrs of Christ. We shall select a few of them; those who filled their time with Church work of lasting importance.

At the beginning of the history of the autocephalous Serbian Church, we have its greatest son, St. Sava (1173-1236). The history of this church starts really with him. As a young man, Rastko Nemanjich showed an inclination for a life of prayer and meditation. His father, Stevan Nemanja, was the founder of the Serbian state which sharply extended its boundaries and became an empire later on, in the fourteenth century under Tsar Dushan. Rastko left his father's home, went to Mount Athos, and became a monk, Sava, when he was eighteen years old. For the next sixteen years he lived the life of an ascetic and passed through the school of Orthodox spirituality at its very center, Mount Athos. There he transformed an abandoned monastery into a place for training and educating future spiritual leaders of the Serbian Church. This monastery, Hilandar, has performed just this role throughout centuries. At the end of his rule, Sava's father became a monk, joined his son, and died in Hilandar in 1900.

World headquarters: The Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America is a US-based autonomous church body in the jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate headquartered in Belgrade, Serbia.

Administrative structure: There are 3 diocese in the United States: The diocese of New Gracanica and Midwestern America, with its headquarters at the New Gracanica Monastery in Third Lake, Illinois; the Eastern American Diocese, with its headquarters in Mars, Pennsylvania; and the Western American Diocese, with its headquarters in Alhambra-Los Angeles, California.

The present Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America has its origins in the immigration of Serbs who came from the regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Dalmatia, Montenegro and the Balkans in the middle to late 19th century. A large immigration of Serbs followed from the Ottoman ruled Kosovo and Metohija region between the years 1890-1915.

How long will it thus go on! When will the baptized become active Christians, so that the pastors may give their attention to the conversion of the heathen? What a terrible battle we must fight. Already the fire of hell is in the world. Great cities are multiplying throughout the land. The farmer, as the word is defined in our dictionaries, is a thing of the past. It is now the land-owner with a mansion in the city, a yacht on the sea, and with a private train across the continent. There are comparatively but a few laborers in the fields—too poor to support families. The quiet country homes are becoming few, shall I say precious? I fear not so, because people are fast losing their ability to rightly estimate the value of things. Most of the cities in all the world are overcrowded. The female portion of the population is most conspicuous. A stupid craze after unwholesome fashions is the one all-absorbing passion of the majority of women. There is no room for gardens and yards; most of the children in San Francisco are actually brought up in the streets.

The origin of the ecclesial presence in the U.S.A. of the Serbian people began in the middle of the 19th century, as Serbs began to immigrate to the North American Continent. Most of the immigrants at that time were from the areas of Austria-Hungry, Dalmatia and Montenegro. With hundreds of new immigrants from 1892-1901, the first church communities were established in California and in parts of the South. The parishes that formed during this time generally were served under the multi-ethnic Russian North American mission, led by the Russian Orthodox Archbishop in New York. Atop the highest hill in the city of Jackson, California, the first Serbian parish was established by Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich—the first U.S. born Orthodox priest. Consecrated in 1894 by Bishop Nikolai, the Russian Archbishop of Alaska and North America, it is believed to be the oldest Serbian church in U.S.A.

Поводом тзв. „Америчког раскола“

Дијаспора је поодавно један од најсложенијих проблема читавог Православља, и зато је с разлогом стављена на дневни ред будућег Васељенског Сабора Православне Цркве. Да одмах буде јасно: Дијаспора, као и код Јевреја у Светом Писму, није по себи неко зло. Она је била неизбежност и изазов за Израиљ Божији, стари и нови, тј. за Цркву. Ако ништа друго, Дијаспора све нас, као заједницу Народа Божијег у историји, подсећа на путнички и крсни статус Цркве у овом свету и веку: „у свету смо, али нисмо од овога света“, у Дому смо Божијем, али је Домострој (Икономија) још у току; Царство Божије је већ присутно, али смо још на путу ка Царству, ка Небеској Отаџбини.
