Harvard Club of Serbia

On 29 June 2004 more than a dozen Harvard alumni and past fellows met on a riverboat (splav!) on the Danube river in Belgrade, Serbia to establish the Harvard Club of Serbia as a non-profit civic association. Since then we have organized a number of social, educational and recruiting events.

Our members are graduates from Harvard College, the schools of Arts and Sciences, Business, Design, Divinity, Education, JFK School of Government, Law, Medicine and Public Health, Harvard Executive programmes and current Serbian students at Harvard University. They include entrepreuners, leaders in civil society, diplomats, government ministers, journalists, educators and artists.

SupportSerbia.com is run by a Serbian-American family living in Honolulu and Washington, D.C. After visiting Serbia for the first time in 2011, we wanted to share what we had seen in Serbia with other Serbian-Americans and the world!

What we saw:

a heritage we are proud of;

Ilija Ika Panajotovic

Ilija "Ika" Panajotovic (25 April 1932 - 18 July 2001) was a Serbian film producer and tennis player.

Panajotovic, who made the junior semi-finals at Wimbledon in 1948, won back to back Yugoslavian Junior Championship titles in 1948 and 1949.

The Serbian competed in 12 Grand Slam tournaments during his career, all in the 1950s. He appeared at Wimbledon seven times and played in the French Championships on five occasions. From 1953 to 1959, Panajotovic participated in Wimbledon every year and made the third round in the 1958 Championships. He had a five set win over Akhtar Ali in the second round, before exiting to tournament with a loss to sixth seed Kurt Nielsen. In the men's doubles he also had success, with Panajotovic and his partner Ivko Plecevic reaching the quarter-finals.

On The Holy Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy is at the center of Orthodox Christian life. It is through the Eucharist that the faithful are united with Christ and therefore with one another. Every Eucharistic gathering is an image and a reality of the Heavenly Liturgy, i.e. unceasing Synaxis of angels and saints around God’s throne. Thus the Liturgy is the proclamation of and a real image of God’s Kingdom in this world.

In this television interview conducted by the Logos, a renowned Orthodox theologian and retired Bishop of Zahumlje and Hercegovina, his Grace Atanasije, brings forth these essential points citing historical development of the Liturgies bringing to light the present misunderstanding of certain Liturgical actions and movements.

Bishop Atanasije aptly points out the necessity for Liturgical renewal, i.e. moving away from passive liturgical attendance to active participation and immersion of the soul and body into a full communion with Christ.
